Children’s Dental Emergency Services

At Calgary Smiles Children's Dental Specialists, our pediatric dental clinic is able to provide urgent and specialized care for children facing dental emergencies or urgent dental issues in clinic during business hours

What is considered a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies in children can include toothaches, knocked-out teeth, dental trauma, severe tooth decay, or other dental injuries

What to do:

  • Clean the area around the sore tooth and look for any signs of food stuck between the teeth. Use a toothbrush and/or dental floss to dislodge the trapped food or debris.
  • If there is a “pimple” or swelling around that tooth or if the face is swollen call a dentist immediately.
  • Once you have found that tooth, handle it by the top (crown) portion NOT the root portion. You may rinse the tooth with water, but DO NOT clean or handle it unnecessarily. Try to reinsert it in its socket. Hold that tooth in place by biting on a clean gauze or cloth. Alternatively, transport the tooth in a cup of milk. See a dentist IMMEDIATELY!
  • Baby teeth do not need to be reinserted
  • At Calgary Smiles Children’s Dental Specialists, Dr Batra is an experienced pediatric dentist who can handle a range of urgent situations, including toothaches, dental trauma, knocked-out teeth, severe tooth decay, and other dental injuries or pathologies.

Children who have suffered dental injuries such as knocked-out teeth, fractured teeth, or displaced teeth should receive immediate care

Children with severe tooth decay or dental infections may require antibiotics, or emergency treatment such as tooth extractions or root canal therapy to prevent further complications and alleviate pain
